Behind the Scenes (October)

Recent travels, a complicated relationship with Autumn, and hours of great tunes

A Week in Madeira

Earlier this month I helped host a group trip to Madeira, Portugal. It was a beautiful adventure, full of awe and wonder and slowing down and breathing deeply.

This trip was the maiden voyage for a new project I’ve been dreaming about for a year called Wonder Passage. We curate travel experiences to some of the most magnificent places on earth to restore the soul.

I put together a short photo essay with some of the most memorable moments from Madeira here:

SAD Fall

This time of year brings a lot of uneasiness for me.

I love so much about Autumn. But I’ve learned that sunlight and blue skies make a big difference for me, and their absence creates a gloom in me that’s hard to stave off through the Winter. Also, many of the hardest moments I’ve gone through over the past few years have tended to happen around year-end, so I think I have some conditioned melancholy built into the cold seasons.

If you deal with Seasonal Affect Disorder, comment below and let me know how what you’ve learned about navigating the gray.

What I’m Working On

Two essays I’m terrified to finish, and terrified to post. One about the relationship between anxiety, therapy, and wonder. The other related to politics, power and “Christian Nationalism.”

A bunch of leadership development content. This is a topic I’m deeply passionate about, and it’s something I feel God has specifically gifted me for. But I’ve put a lot of it on the back burner, so I’m dusting some things off, reactivating some muscles that have been atrophying, and getting ready to share in this lane.

Preparing for this year’s launch of my Year End Review resource. If you’ve been following me for a while, this will be familiar to you. If you’re new to the party (welcome!) you’ll hear more about this in December. It’s an incredibly cathartic practice that I think everybody can benefit from in a big way.

What I’m Listening To

Apologies in advance to Apple Music users. We’re a Spotify family in this house.

Melancholy Fall Playlist

Moody vibes for firesides, full moons, and cold drives. This my own playlist that I’ve been curating for a couple of years.

“All’s Well and I’m Worse Than Ever” - Yoste

“Isla” is my daughter’s name and also my favorite song on this album. You’ll find a couple of these songs in the playlist above.

“Couer D’Alene” by CVBZ

The track “God Knows When” has been on repeat an embarrassing number of times the past two weeks for me.

Say Hey!

I’d love to hear from you!
